Oak the Orca Thinks About Gravity book cover
The premise

Underwater, "Oak" the Orca's weight means almost nothing. On land, it means everything. Oak wants to know why.

Gravity pulls. Water lifts. But Oak’s story is also tied to a girl who grew up watching him from the shores of Patagonia—and carried the memory of him into adulthood.

Their relationship brings together gravity, buoyancy, the human spine, and the ways water changes what our bodies must carry.

About the Authors

Robert Savinelli, PhD

The Chemist

A chemist curious about how the physical world behaves. Recurring neck pain and family members' spinal struggles made spinal health personal. Swimming, sailing, and scuba diving led him to think hard about gravity and buoyancy.

Joseph Tu, M.D.

The Physician: Spine & Pain Specialist

Joe is a spine and pain specialist with a major medical network in the Los Angeles area, where he specializes in managing and treating patients with neck, back and joint pains. He also has personal experience with spine and joint pain from previous athletic injuries. He has developed a routine to manage his condition and wishes to disseminate what he has learned through the years from patient care and his own experiences to help more people understand, prevent, and manage spine and joint pains.

Rob and Joe are longtime friends. Oak grew from their conversations about gravity, life in water, and why people should care for their backs before something begins to hurt.
